Hey Y, it’s great that you’re in film school and presumably following what you really want to do, plus meeting with big names in the industry – I always wanted to be a director or actress but had to go the pragmatic sooner-return route instead (maybe I’ll be a screenwriter later on).
Hitch was a really good romcom and there were also some good smaller artsy films in the 90s like Tortilla Soup and Eve’s Bayou, as well as Chinese films like Red Sorghum (before the whole flying kung-fu era that got popularized with Crouching Tiger), which got away from the stereotypes (I’m guessing the situation used to be worse in say the 80s and earlier, e.g. as portrayed in Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle). I also don’t get the Twilight phenomenon, just seeing the commercials that auto-played on On-Demand was cringe-inducing enough (someone needs to do a spoof, perhaps with Sexy Pterodactyl in a leading role of aloof masculinity ).
I’d like to check out you guys’ channel and comment – just a suggestion, maybe you could put a link at the blogroll so that people can find it easily?
Hugs,
Escapist
P.S. Thanks for the Like on the Why Solutions post – it’s nice to know that other young women “get” the ideas.
Actually, I’m not in film school. This is just a video from a channel I’m subscribed to on YouTube! . I’m actually a psych major looking to go to medical school *fingers crossed*. I just so happen to be interested in Social Media, blogging ect. The girl on the video’s YouTube user name is rainonmebi and her blog is lostcitymedia.wordpress.com.
Yeah. I’m really dig your solutions post. One of my pet peeves is people/movements complaining without taking action. I’m looking forward to reading more.
Hey Y, many thanks. I was kind of confused by the video at first: “she looks different from her avatar* I thought she was in the sciences?”. You’re smart so you should have your pick of med schools There’s a certain amount of hazing inherent in the profession (I’ve got a relative that’s gone through the whole residency grind), but its also a great universal “portable wealth” skill.
I thought the video made a good point re how people need to take responsibility – and also how Hollywood’s generic “action hero/everyman” roles still tend to have barriers (e.g. American Indians in particular seem to be mostly typecast into ethnically-specific roles)
Yep, the whole “Culture of Complaint” fatalism thing is something that’s always bothered me, so I try to do the solutions thing in posts. The complaint thing gets to be a contagion of learned helplessness, and it shows up in a wide range of groups, even in the First World. I can’t post/comment as much as I’d like, but I love writing and its great that its appreciated (on the Internet, one gets many trolls)
*I look different from mine – mine is of Warrior Woman from Mad Max Road Warrior (kind of a cheesy movie, but I thought she was an interesting character and got short shrift on the plot).
